On Sunday, January 17 at 3 pm, the University of Minnesota will present the 40th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute Concert. As this event enters its fourth decade, we honor the legacy of Representative John Lewis, towering figure of the civil rights movement and member of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s inner circle.

Campus Climate Micro-Grant Fall 2020 Update

The Office for Equity and Diversity will not be opening a new Campus Climate Micro-Grant cycle in fall 2020. Due to COVID-19, many of last year’s recipients have not yet used their funds, and we plan to monitor the situation this fall before making a decision on a new cycle. 

We will provide updates this spring with information on future Campus Climate Micro-Grant funding cycles. The Campus Climate Mirco-Grant Project is made possible with generous support from President Gabel.

University of Minnesota joins others challenging U.S. visa restrictions on international students

University of Minnesota President Joan Gabel announced today that the University will join an amicus brief in support of a lawsuit that challenges recent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) restrictions on visas for international students. Minnesota is one of a growing number of universities nationwide, including many of its Big Ten peers, that are filing amicus briefs in support of the Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology lawsuit against the federal government.


Gender studies class looks to activism to prevent sexual misconduct

This fall semester, a University of Minnesota freshman seminar put student activism at the forefront of ending sexual misconduct on campus. 

The course, “Ending Sexual Violence at the University of Minnesota," asked students to think about what changes they could make to improve safety on campus. Students also released a survey to better understand the prevalence of sexual misconduct.


Twin Cities dance company explores social justice through craft

On a cold night in late December, members of the Ananya Dance Theatre company bobbed and weaved under the fluorescent light fixtures of their west St. Paul studio.

To a worldly observer, their movements would have called several different disciplines to mind.

The classical Indian dance form of Odissi. The brusque and martial eastern Indian tradition of Chhau dance. The elastic Vinyasa yoga.

International Student and Scholar Services has announced the ISSS Intercultural Workshop Series for Spring 2020. The series includes sessions focused on intercultural competency and skills development as well as “Culture In-Depth” sessions discussing the unique practices, customs, and values of some of the largest international student populations on our campus.
