New group created for faculty, staff and graduate students veterans

The first veteran and military group for staff, faculty and graduate students launched at the University of Minnesota this month, providing members with resources, networking opportunities and a space to share experiences.

The Veteran and Military Affinity Group aims to layout an inclusive and accessible forum for University employees and graduate students who have served or are currently serving in the military.

American Indian student group campaign addresses culture appropriation during Halloween

Part of the Halloween season for University of Minnesota student Meenakshi Mattson – and for many people of color – is seeing her culture appropriated. 

Mattson said she has seen saris, dubbed as “Bollywood dancer costumes,” sold on Amazon and at Party City. 

“It’s very otherizing,” said Mattson, a fourth-year psychology student. For Mattson, as a transgender person, saris have a deep cultural significance because they’re connected to how she expresses her femininity.

Survey: 1 in 4 undergrad women at U of M reported sexual violence on campus

About 1 in 4 undergraduate women at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities said they were sexually assaulted on campus, according to a recent survey of 33 major universities released Tuesday.

The results mirror findings at the other universities surveyed, which included several Ivy League schools.

UMN international student enrollment sees significant increase

The University of Minnesota - Twin Cities campus saw a significant rise in undergraduate international freshmen enrollment this fall after combating a substantial drop last year.

As of fall 2019, the number of freshmen living in a foreign country when they applied to the University increased about 63 percent compared to last year, according to the Office of Institutional Research.  

However, the 2018 freshmen enrollment for the same demographic shrunk nearly 30 percent compared to 2017, according to data from the University's International Student and Scholar Services.
