The inaugural First-Generation College Celebration took place on November 8, 2017, the 52nd anniversary of the Higher Education Act of 1965. First-Generation Students are those who are the first in their family to earn a four-year college degree. The University of Minnesota celebrated this day by encouraging students, staff and faculty to share their first-gen stories.

University of Minnesota calls for 'bystander intervention' training to end sex assaults

The University of Minnesota should combat campus sexual assault with widespread training in “bystander intervention,” a special advisory group says.

In a report released Thursday, a team of university leaders recommended a concerted effort to teach students how to recognize and intervene in “situations in which sexual assault may occur” to help prevent the kind of sexual assault that rocked the Twin Cities campus last year.

New vegan group hopes to expand options in dining halls

Vegan students will soon be able to voice their campus dining concerns directly with University of Minnesota officials. 

On Friday, University Dining’s new vegan team will hold its first meeting, where students can share input and brainstorm potential solutions to the school's lack of vegan food options.

The team was created by the University's food vendor Aramark and its campus sustainability coordinator Haley Burns, who is a vegan herself, after a suggestion made at a Minnesota Student Association meeting.

Campus groups start student safety committee

Various campus groups formed a student-safety committee in response to a report that revealed how some students feel unsafe at the University of Minnesota and its surrounding neighborhoods.

On Nov. 3, a committee of University entities, including student government and administrative bodies, held its first meeting to discuss ways to help students feel safer on campus. 

At an Oct. 24 forum meeting, the Minnesota Student Association announced recommendations they would present to the safety-focused committee.
