Apply for a 2016 Equity and Diversity Transformation Award

Each year, the Office for Equity and Diversity (OED) sponsors numerous awards in support of equity and diversity work and achievements at the University of Minnesota. Please consider applying for a 2016 Equity and Diversity Transformation Award. Equity and Diversity Transformation Awards seek to infuse equity and diversity into every aspect of the University’s teaching, learning, research, service and outreach by funding creative yet pragmatic proposals for projects that support equity and diversity initiatives.  The focus for this year's awards is building capacity for institutional change through the use of strategic partnerships.  All academic and administrative units across the University’s campuses are eligible to apply for Equity and Diversity Transformation Awards. The amount of award will depend upon the scope and breadth of the project, but will typically range from $1,000 to $5,000.

Anti-Islamic flyers found on MN Daily newsstands and inserted in some papers

On Tuesday, April 5 in the evening, the Bias Response Team (BRT) for the Twin Cities campus received a report that anti-Islamic flyers were found tucked inside The Minnesota Daily newspapers on newsstands in Blegen Hall and the Humphrey School of Public Affairs. The flyer disparages Islam, Muslims and the Twin Cities campus’s 2016 “Islam Awareness Week.” It is not known who created or distributed the flyer. The BRT and its campus partners responded on April 6 by informing Muslim student groups and The Minnesota Daily about the flyer, and by recording this bias incident report. Because the University denounces religious bigotry, the Bias Response Team responded to this incident and created this statement with the hope of eliciting more campus-wide conversation about how we can create and sustain an inclusive environment for our Muslim community members. The University is deeply committed to a safe and healthy work and study environment for all.

Join Kyle Guante Tran Myhre on April 11th for the final presentation of his research and reflection for the U of MN's Master of Liberal Studies Program. The performance, "Page, Stage, Engage: Intersections of Spoken Word Culture, Critical Pedagogy, and Social Justice Education," will both explore and demonstrate how spoken word (in the form of live performances and online video) can be used to make social justice education programs-- particularly first-year orientation and welcome week programs-- more engaging, more critical, and ultimately, more effective.
