The Nutritious U Food Pantry is open to any registered undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. No verification of income is required. 

Attention students – if you struggle to get enough quality food to eat, visit the Nutritious U Food Pantry on December 10-12 from 12-6 pm in Coffman Union, Room 210. Learn more.

U of M works to increase access to lactation spaces on campus

The University of Minnesota is defining new standards for lactation spaces that could create more resources for users, adding on to the minimum criteria required by state law.

Minnesota state law requires that a workplace lactation space be a private room with access to an electrical outlet near the mother's workspace. The University, currently in the process of establishing additional criteria, will add that spaces must also be wheelchair accessible to be designated as an official University lactation space, said Lactation Advocacy Committee member Mikaela Robertson.

UMN students collaborate with RecWell to pilot women-only gym space

In an effort to create a comfortable space for women to work out, the University of Minnesota’s Recreation and Wellness Center is piloting a women-only gym space.

Around two years ago, University students Sumaya Noor and Fahima Osman began researching physical activity rates in the Somali community. They found that many Somali women were not comfortable exercising in co-ed gyms due to beliefs regarding modesty. Last month, the RecWell began piloting a women-only gym space as a result of Noor and Osman’s research on perceptions of physical activity in the Somali community.

U of M names first senior director of American Indian Tribal Nations Relations

Tadd M. Johnson has been named the University of Minnesota’s first senior director of American Indian Tribal Nations Relations.

In this inaugural role, Johnson will serve as the liaison between the University of Minnesota and regional Tribal Nations, creating pathways for strong collaborations.

“I am honored and humbled to be selected for this new position,” Johnson said. “It is my hope that this great University will form new and lasting partnerships with the Native Nations of the region.”

Hmong women student group celebrates, challenges tradition with New Year celebration

More than 200 people gathered at the University of Minnesota Friday to attend a Hmong New Year celebration hosted by Viivncaus, a Hmong women’s student group. 

The Hmong New Year is a traditional celebration marked by a resting period at the end of the harvest season, taking place in areas where Hmong communities are located. Traditionally, the New Year is a time for members of the Hmong community to cleanse themselves and their homes from bad spirits and experiences, bringing in a new energy for the year ahead.

This discussion will be led by Keetha Vue (she/her/hers), Women’s Center Graduate Intern, avid solo traveler and lover of matcha lattes!

Tongues Untied presents its third program of the year Wellness Wednesday, Tongues Untied: Plan Your Finals With Bullet Journals, at the Gender and Sexuality Center for Queer and Trans Life (40 Appleby Hall, 128 Pleasant Street SE). The Tongues Untied program is designed to enhance and center the experiences of queer Indigenous people and people of color.
